ADC Takes Shape As New Opposition, Targets 2027 Presidency

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the reported incidents of violence, intimidation and disruption that allegedly occurred during political campaign activities in Ede and Osogbo, warning that such developments could threaten the peaceful atmosphere ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election.

The condemnation was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Spokesperson of the ADC Gubernatorial Campaign Council, Hon. Adebisi Nurein, who expressed concern over reports of clashes involving supporters of political parties during campaign engagements in parts of the state.

The party said the incidents were contrary to the principles of democracy and peaceful coexistence, stressing that electioneering campaigns should be centred on ideas, programmes and policies rather than actions capable of generating tension and insecurity among residents.

ADC called on political parties, particularly the All Progressives Congress and Accord, to caution their supporters against acts capable of undermining public peace.

It also urged security agencies and electoral authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into the incidents and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The opposition party further reiterated its commitment to a peaceful and issue-based campaign, maintaining that political leadership should emerge through the free and fair expression of the people’s will at the polls.

The party also appealed to residents of Osun State to remain law-abiding and resist attempts to drag the state into needless political confrontation, noting that the collective interest of the state must supersede partisan considerations.

According to the statement, “These unfortunate developments are inconsistent with the democratic values of peace, tolerance and respect that should guide electoral engagements in Osun State. The people of Osun deserve campaigns that are focused on ideas, policies and solutions to the challenges facing our state and not acts capable of creating fear, tension or instability.

“All political parties, especially the APC, Accord and other stakeholders, must caution their supporters and ensure that campaign activities are conducted peacefully and within the confines of the law.”

It also called on security agencies and electoral authorities to investigate the incidents and prosecute anyone found culpable, irrespective of political affiliation.

The statement further said, “the future of our state is greater than the politics of division and confrontation. Osun deserves a government that prioritises economic growth, quality education, accessible healthcare, youth empowerment, agricultural development and the welfare of citizens.

“The ADC offers a fresh vision of responsible leadership and inclusive governance. We are confident that through peaceful participation, unity of purpose and faith in democracy, the people of Osun can chart a new course toward prosperity and progress,” the party noted.

ADC also urged security agencies to ensure that the law takes its course against all perpetrators of political violence.
