NHRC, CDHR Intervene in SARS’ Brutality on Police, Mother In-Law, Husband in Osun
The National Human Right Commission NHRC) and the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) have intervened in the alleged brutality of a policeman, Mr Sunday Ajayi, a 57-year-old woman, Mrs Olufunmi Oke and her son in-law, Mr Adeniyi Jones in Osogbo by men of the Federal Anti Robbery Squad from Adeniyi Adele zone, Lagos.
Ajayi, a police prosecutor at the Dugbe Police Division, Osogbo, Osun State, Oke and Jones were allegedly brutalized by the SARS men at the premises of the Osun State High Court, Osogbo, on Wednesday evening.
Ajayi who was a prosecutor on a case of malicious damage against a Lagos based business woman, Mrs Kikelomo Kayode Oladipupo at the Osogbo magistrate court was allegedly beaten and hit with gun boot on the head by the overzealous SARS men.
Mrs Oke was also attacked, hit with gun boot and molested by SARS who came with a hilux vehicle registered BV 851 KWL, donated by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, according to eye witnesses.
Jones, a business partner of Mrs Oladipupo was allegedly beaten blue-black before he was bundled into the vehicle by the SARS who later detained him at the Criminal Investigation Department, Ring road, Osogbo.
According to Mrs Oke, the police prosecutor, Ajayi, herself and Jones were coming out of the court when the SARS operatives attacked them.
Jones is a complainant in a case of malicious damage and breach of peace instituted against Mrs Oladipupo by the police, following her refusal to settle the matter amicably at the Dugbe Police Division, Osogbo.
Mrs Oladipupo allegedly vandalized Jones’s fish deport at Igbona Area, Osogbo following his inability to pay up his N1.2m debt incurred during business transaction with her.
She allegedly went to vandalise the fish deport in company of one Ameh Sunday, who claimed to be a military police and other people on February 16, 2017.
Following public outcry on the matter, the NHRC and CDHR, Osun State branch, waded into the matter on Thursday to ensure that the SARS operatives’ conduct was investigated by the police.
State Coordinator of the NHRC, Mr Abayomi Ogundele said the case was reported to the commission and it has taken it up.
Ogundele and one of his colleagues reportedly went to the SCID and discussed the matter with the Assistant Commissioner of Police who released Mr Jones from detention around 2pm yesterday.
The police boss reportedly chastised the SARS operatives on their conduct and urged to embrace and understand the concept of modern policing.
He directed that Mr Jones and his surety should go to the Federal SARS office at Adeniji Adele, Lagos on Monday to show themselves.
Findings by CityMirrorNews revealed that the federal SARS had come to arrest Jones following a petition written against him by the accused Mrs Oladipupo who alleged him of threat to life, issuance of dud cheque and fraud.
The petition which is being investigated by the SARS in Lagos might not be unconnected with the case at the court.
Speaking with CityMirrorNews on the matter, CDHR Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr Ismaeel Uthman said the organization was interested in the case and would ensure that the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris is officially informed for proper investigation on the matter.
