By Olusakin Babalola,Ibadan
A candidate for the Ibarapa Central Federal constituency in the last general elections, Dr. Adebayo Adepoju has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for conducting hitch free elections in the state, pleading that the same should be replicated in subsequent elections.
Dr.Adepoju who contested on the platform of Zenith Labour Party equally lauded the electorate for eschewing violence and resisting all forms of inducement by desperate politicians who wanted to be in power at all costs .
Adepoju who is also the Founder of Development For Africa Needs and Progress Initiatives (DANPI) said this during a chat with newsmen in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital on Monday.
“Though tension and apprehensions were high during the 2019 campaigns and elections, residents of the state and INEC worked in synergy to confirm that Oyo remains a pace setter in all respects. I believe the same would be replicated in the next elections, the Igbo Ora born politician explained.
Dr. Adepoju who is an advocate of youth taking active part in politics said that he has the conviction that youths have very articulate, fresh and unpolluted ideas, adding that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State who is a youth, is an example to be emulated because of his brilliance and intellect.
‘”This Governor who is a youth is undoubtedly doing well to the admiration of Oyo residents. The Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly and a youth appointed as Commissioner are pride to the youths”, he said.
Dr. Adepoju believes that encouraging the youths into politics was a paradigm shift from old ideas because youths from different backgrounds and states particularly, those in the National Assembly, would be able to make better laws that would better the lot of Nigerians.
On salaries and allowances being paid the parliamentarians which is generating controversy, the NGO founder recommended that lawmaking should be on part time basis adding that the House should be moderately funded without adversely affecting national budget.
He advised the lawmakers to be patriotic and put the country first, adding that media report had it that most of them were after their second term aspirations instead of collaborating with other arms of government in the implementation of the laws made for peace and tranquility.
Dr. Adepoju called for better collaboration between the Executive and legislature as against what was experienced during the last regime where there were frictions on many issues to the detriment of the masses.
