Osun NUJ Raises Alarm Over Pre-Election Violence, Urges Peaceful Polls

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, has expressed concern over the rising wave of political violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election, calling on political actors, security agencies and the electorate to work collectively towards ensuring a peaceful, free and credible electoral process.

The union made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of its July Congress held at the NUJ Secretariat in Osogbo, where members deliberated on issues affecting the state and the forthcoming governorship election.

The Congress urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain impartial and professional in the discharge of their duties, stressing that neutrality was essential to building public confidence in the electoral process.

It also charged politicians to rein in their supporters and conduct their campaigns peacefully, insisting that elections should never be treated as a do-or-die affair.

The journalists further appealed to all eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from designated Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) centres and turn out to vote without fear on election day.

The union equally called on security agencies to guarantee the safety of journalists before, during and after the governorship election, noting that media practitioners must be able to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without intimidation or harassment.

Beyond the election, the Congress commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for approving the permanent employment of 66 freelance staff of the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC), describing the decision as a positive step toward improving workers’ welfare.

It also acknowledged the contribution of Senator Lere Oyewumi, representing Osun West Senatorial District, to the successful absorption of the affected workers into the state’s workforce.

The Congress encouraged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the gesture by demonstrating greater commitment, diligence and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

The journalists also praised the Federal Government for the rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, while urging the Osun State Government to strengthen security around schools and border communities to prevent similar incidents.

The communiqué was issued at the end of the July Congress presided over by the Osun NUJ Chairman, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, and signed by the Communiqué Drafting Committee led by the NUJ Secretary, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju.
