Igbajo Achievers Lions Club Plants Fruit Trees In Schools
-Promotes Food Security, Environmental Sustainability
The Igbajo Achievers Lions Club has taken its hunger relief and environmental sustainability campaign to two schools in Igbajo, Boluwaduro Local Government Area of Osun State, with the planting of edible fruit trees at Community High School, Igbajo and Kiriji Memorial College, Igbajo.
The service activity, held on Tuesday, 2nd June 2026, formed part of the club’s Hunger and Food Security Service Activity, with a focus on providing long-term nutritional and environmental benefits to students, teachers and the host community.
Speaking during the exercise, the Charter President of Igbajo Achievers Lions Club, Lion Yinka-Diamond Ishola, said the project reflected the club’s commitment to practical service that touches lives beyond immediate relief.
Ishola explained that the planting of fruit-bearing trees was designed to address hunger in a sustainable way while also supporting environmental protection. According to him, the trees would, over time, provide fruits for the school environment, improve greenery and help the younger generation understand the importance of caring for nature.
He said the club chose the schools because children must be included in conversations around food security, health, environmental care and community responsibility.
“This is not just about planting trees today. It is about planting something that can serve the schools and the community for many years. As Lions, we believe service should leave value behind. These trees will grow, bear fruits and remind the children that the environment must be protected,” he said.
Also speaking, the Club Service Chairperson, Lion Oluseyi Kayode Faniran, said the activity was part of Lions Clubs International’s wider effort to promote hunger relief, public health and environmental sustainability through community-based service.
Faniran noted that food security should not be seen only in terms of immediate feeding programmes, but also in terms of long-term support systems that can improve access to nutrition.
He said the club would continue to identify simple but meaningful projects that can improve the lives of people, especially in schools and communities where such interventions can have lasting impact.
According to him, the edible fruit tree planting project also carries an educational value, as pupils and students will be able to watch the trees grow and learn responsibility through their protection and maintenance.
In his remarks, the Principal of Community Primary School, Igbajo, Mr Kayode Bakare, commended Igbajo Achievers Lions Club for choosing the school as one of the beneficiaries of the project.
Bakare described the initiative as thoughtful and timely, saying it would beautify the school environment and also benefit the pupils in the future when the trees begin to bear fruits. He assured the club that the school would encourage pupils and staff to protect the trees and ensure that the purpose of the project is achieved.
At Kiriji Memorial College, Igbajo, the Principal, Mr Oke, also appreciated the club for extending the service activity to the school. He said the project would support environmental awareness among students and help them understand the value of planting and nurturing trees.
He noted that schools are important places to promote sustainable habits because young people often carry such lessons into their homes and communities.
The exercise attracted Lion leaders, members of Igbajo Achievers Lions Club, school officials and students, who participated in the planting and expressed appreciation for the gesture.
The club said the project was not a one-off activity, but part of its continuing commitment to hunger relief, environmental protection, public wellbeing and sustainable community development in Igbajo and beyond.
