The Igbajo Achievers Lions Club has delivered a solar-powered street lighting project, as part of its 2025/2026 service year initiatives, aimed at addressing energy challenges and enhancing security in Igbajo, Boluwaduro Local Government Area of Osun State.

The project, which involved the installation of about 17 solar street lights at strategic locations within the community, was officially commissioned on Friday in the presence of traditional rulers, community leaders, government officials, and residents.

Speaking at the event, the Charter President of the club, Lion Yinka Diamond Ishola, said the initiative was conceived in response to the persistent power supply challenges in the town, noting that the intervention would help illuminate streets and improve safety.

“This is not just a legacy project for our service year, but a deliberate effort to ensure that our host community feels the impact of our presence. We observed the need for improved lighting due to irregular electricity supply and decided to provide a sustainable alternative through solar-powered street lights,” he said.

Ishola added that the club has set a target of installing up to 50 street lights across the town in phases, assuring that mechanisms have been put in place to ensure proper maintenance and sustainability of the project.

He also emphasized the need for community ownership, urging residents and local leaders to safeguard the facilities against vandalism.

Also speaking, the District Governor, Lion Oluwakemi Eribake, commended the club for what she described as a commendable and impactful initiative, particularly for a relatively young club.

She urged members of the community to protect the installations, stressing that access to basic infrastructure such as lighting remains critical to improving quality of life.

In his remarks, the District Governor-elect for District 404 B6, Lion Oluomo Sunday Akere, described the project as a milestone achievement for the club, which he noted was established barely 18 months ago.

“This is their first major project, and it is a significant one. The installation of these street lights will improve security and also enhance social and economic activities within the community. We are hopeful that subsequent phases will extend to other parts of the town,” he said.

Akere further hinted at possible collaboration with the local government in expanding the project in the future.

The Club Service Chairperson, Lion Kayode Faniran, said the initiative was designed to improve the overall living conditions of residents, adding that the presence of key stakeholders at the event underscored the importance of the project.

He called on well-meaning individuals, both within and outside the community, to emulate such efforts by contributing to grassroots development.

Also speaking, the Council Chairman of Boluwaduro East LCDA, Engineer Samson Oluwole Awodiji, noted that the project would significantly enhance security and boost residents’ confidence to move freely at night.

According to him, “When roads and streets are well illuminated, it discourages criminal activities and allows people to go about their lawful activities without fear.”

He assured that the local government would work with community leaders to ensure that the installations are protected and properly maintained for long-term use.

The event attracted a large turnout of residents and community stakeholders, who expressed appreciation to the Lions Club for the intervention.

Highlight of the ceremony was the official commissioning of the solar street lights by the District Governor, Lion Oluwakemi Eribake, as well as the decoration of the council chairman, Engineer Awodiji, as a member of the Lions Club.
