Osun: Igbajo Achievers Lions Club Drives Environmental Sanitation At Owode Ede Market
By Raphael Oni, Osogbo
Members of the Igbajo Achievers Lions Club on Wednesday carried out a large scale environmental sanitation exercise at Owode Ede Market in Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State, reinforcing their commitment to community service and public health.
The initiative formed part of activities marking the month of April, which is dedicated to environmental sustainability on the Lions International calendar. The exercise involved the clearing of refuse, cleaning of adjoining shops, and proper evacuation of waste generated from previous market activities.
Speaking during the exercise, Charter President of the club, Lion Yinka Diamond Ishola, explained that environmental protection is one of the key global causes of Lions International, alongside other focus areas such as diabetes and childhood cancer.
He noted that the sanitation exercise is an annual effort aimed at ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for the community, stressing that maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility.
Ishola further stated that the initiative complements government efforts, while calling for increased action toward promoting healthy living and sustaining a hygienic environment.
Also speaking, District Governor, Lion Oluomo Sunday Akere, highlighted the health risks associated with poor environmental hygiene, warning that unclean surroundings often lead to the spread of diseases.
He disclosed that members of the club had successfully cleaned a substantial part of the market, with waste properly collected and disposed of using designated trucks on site.
Akere emphasized that the government alone cannot address environmental challenges, urging residents and stakeholders to actively participate in sanitation efforts.
He advised that individuals should emulate such initiatives and contribute to keeping their surroundings clean in order to prevent illness and promote overall well-being.
In his remarks, Club Chairperson, Lion Kayode Faniran, described the exercise as a practical demonstration of the club’s dedication to environmental sustainability and public health.
He commended the enthusiasm and unity displayed by members, noting that the presence of the District Governor and other leaders added momentum to the exercise.
Faniran explained that the cleanup operation involved removing accumulated waste from the market and extending sanitation activities to surrounding shops to ensure a more hygienic environment.
The exercise attracted active participation from members and leaders of the Igbajo Achievers Lions Club, all working collectively to improve environmental conditions at the busy market.
