Davido Writes Trump, Seeks US, Global Attention To Osun Election

Nigerian Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to closely monitor political developments in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

In an open letter published on his X handle, the singer expressed concern over what he described as rising political tension in the state, warning of the potential for violence, intimidation and suppression of voters’ democratic rights.

Davido urged the people of Osun State to be allowed to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and peacefully, without fear or intimidation, while calling on relevant Nigerian authorities to protect voters and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.

“Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear,” Davido said.

The singer specifically appealed to the United States and the wider international community to pay close attention to developments surrounding the election and encourage Nigerian authorities to ensure that the poll is conducted in a peaceful, transparent and credible manner.

He stressed the need for the protection of every eligible voter and respect for every legitimate vote cast during the election.

“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he said.

Davido’s intervention comes against the backdrop of heightened political activities and competing campaigns by major political parties and their candidates ahead of the August 15 poll, amid concerns raised by various stakeholders over security and the credibility of the electoral process.

The singer further urged political parties, security agencies, electoral authorities and other stakeholders to prioritise peace and democratic principles before, during and after the election, warning against actions capable of undermining voters’ confidence in the process.

Davido concluded the appeal by directly tagging President Trump, effectively seeking greater international attention to the political situation in Osun and the need to ensure that the people are allowed to freely determine their next governor through a peaceful and credible electoral process.
