Attack On EndSARS’ Protesters, A Call For Anarchy, Says OPCI President
By Steve Oni, Ilorin
National President of the OoduaI Progressives Care Initiative (OPCI), Dr. Maruff Olanrewaju, has described as tragic and unfortunate that Nigerians are witnessing another form of brutality from a democratic government they toiled and OPCI fought hard to instal.
OPCI President, who was reacting to the killings of some EndSARS protesters across the country by security agents, particularly in Lagos State, wondered “if this government led by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari really cared about the lives and property of the citizens at all.”
He said: “The number of lives lost within five years of this administration is more than people killed in Sudan where war is indeed visible.
“How can a government described as a government of the people by the people for the people suddenly turn against its own people by firing live bullets to defenceless youths protesting against police brutality?
“Peaceful protests/ rallies are part of constitutional right of the citizens and also part of democracy, so why will things always turn upside down in Nigeria?
“Since the beginning of the EndSARS protest, no meaningful official statement has been made by the federal government to calm the situation, it looks as if we have no government, even during Abacha he did address the Nation whenever the demand arose.
“We will not keep silent until the government listens to our call on restructuring of this country. Without adequate and total restructuring, there will be no meaningful development and progress, and the unity of this Nation is being put to question.
“We hereby call on the fearless youths not to despair, but to continue to be in the vanguard and struggle for good governance with a view to rebuilding our Nation to an Eldorado envisaged by them. As a matter of fact, the Storm will not be forever, it will also pass.
