Keyamo’s Handling of Airport Parking Controversy: A Lesson in Transparency and Accountability By Adeboye Adebayo

In public service, true leadership is often tested not during periods of calm but in moments of controversy.

The recent airport parking incident involving former Anambra State’s Governor Peter Obi presented the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development with such a test.

The manner in which the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), handled the matter deserves commendation.

Rather than allowing the issue to be swept under the carpet because it involved a prominent political figure, the minister insisted that due process should prevail.

By ordering a review of the incident, relying on available evidence, and communicating the outcome publicly, he demonstrated that accountability should not be selective.

Whether one agrees with the conclusions or not, the process reflected an effort to subject the matter to institutional scrutiny rather than political convenience.

Even more noteworthy was the minister’s response after a concerned citizen offered to pay the statutory ₦25,000 parking fine on behalf of Peter Obi.

Keyamo made it clear that the issue was never about the amount of money involved.

His position was that the matter concerned compliance with established airport regulations and personal accountability.

In doing so, he shifted public attention from the monetary penalty to the more fundamental principle that rules should apply equally to everyone.

This approach reinforces a critical message for governance in Nigeria; institutions are strengthened when laws and regulations are enforced without regard to status, political affiliation, or public influence.

Accountability loses its meaning if exceptions are made simply because an individual is popular or influential.

Transparency also requires openness. Throughout the controversy, the minister publicly explained the basis of the ministry’s position instead of allowing speculation to dominate the conversation.

Such openness promotes public confidence in government institutions and gives citizens an opportunity to assess the facts for themselves.

It is equally important to recognize that in a democratic society, those affected by government decisions have every right to disagree or challenge official findings.

That is healthy for democracy.

However, government officials also have a responsibility to explain and defend the actions of their institutions where they believe due process has been followed.

In this regard, the Minister fulfilled that responsibility.

As Nigeria continues to modernize its aviation sector.under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu through Festus Keyamo, professionalism, transparency, and consistent enforcement of regulations will remain essential ingredients for safety, order, and public trust.

The handling of this incident reflects an administrative philosophy that emphasizes institutional integrity over personalities.

Festus Keyamo’s conduct in this matter sends a broader signal that aviation regulations should not be treated as mere suggestions but as standards that bind all airport users equally.

If this kind of commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law continues to guide all the sectors of our economy, it will strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s institutions responsible for managing them.
