Nigerian Veteran pop musician, Chris Mba, is dead.

He died after suffering from heart disease. The singer was said to have died on Wednesday night at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH.

His demise was confirmed by the General Manager of Premier Music, Michael Odiong.

Loved by many for his jerry curl, Chris had hits like ‘Funky Situation’, ‘Baby Don’t Cry’, ‘Making my Way’ and ‘Love Everlasting’.

He also performed at an evening of tributes organised for the late Ras Kimono by the Copyright Society of Nigeria in August 2018.

In 2019, journalist Azuka Jebose raised alarm about Chris’ health. He said the singer was down with heart disease and urgently needed financial assistance.

Chris was in the news in June 2018 following a 17-year-old suit he pressed against Nigerian Breweries (NB) Plc. The lawsuit was eventually ruled in his favour.

The singer sustained a serious eye injury in 2000 after he was horsewhipped at NB Plc’s Star Mega Jam staged at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

He subsequently pressed charges against the company in 2001 at the High Court sitting in Enugu which returned verdict in his favour, prompting an appeal.

The singer was eventually awarded N3,478,718.50 against NB Plc.

The musician was famous in the 1980s for his jerry curl and hits like ‘Funky Situation’, ‘Baby Don’t Cry’, ‘Making My Way’ and ‘Love Everlasting’

Michael Odiong, the General Manager of Premier Music which Chris was signed to, shared the news on Thursday in a post shared via his Instagram account.

He wrote, “PREMIER RECORDS EXPRESSES SADNESS ON THE DEATH OF ONE OF ITS ARTISTES, CHRIS MBA.

“According to the general manager of the label, Mr Michael Odiong, Chris Mba was a bundle of talent who localised pop music by adding local instruments into his music to give the African feel. He made waves in the late 80s up to the 90s when he released hits like “Baby Don’t Cry”, “Money” etc.

“We condole with the family and pray God to give them the fortitude to bear the loss.”
