Two Suspects Docked For Allegedly Beating Police Officer In Osun
The Osun State Police Command has arraigned two men before Osun State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Osogbo for allegedly beating Assistant Superintendent of Police, Adeleke Adewale.
Charges preferred against the two defendants, Idowu Salami and Opeyemi Popoola, were conspiracy, assault, stealing, malicious damage and threatening to kill the police officer.
They were initially arraigned on September 10, 2020, and granted bail before the fresh arraignment on Monday.
The police prosecutor, Rasaq Olayiwola, informed the court that the two defendants and others now at large on the 8th and 9th of September, 2020, at Oja-Oba Police Station conspired among themselves to beat up Assistant Superintendent of Police, Adeleke Adewale, by hitting him with a fist blow and threatened to kill him while performing his lawful duty.
Salami and Popoola were accused of stealing the Police Officer’s underwear.
“They also stole four singlets valued N1,200 property of one Francis Ezekwere, threatened to kill him and even destroyed one of his singlets valued N300,” the charge sheet obtained from the court reads in part.
The prosecutor argued that the offences committed by the defendants and others now at large were contrary to and punishable under Sections 516, 390(9), 356(5), 86(1) and 451 of Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.
However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge against them by police.
Their counsel, Kehinde Adepoju, made an oral bail application for them saying, “I pray the court to allow them to continue enjoying the bail that was granted to the two defendants.”
The Magistrate, Asimiyu Adebayo, agreed with the counsel and allowed the defendants to continue enjoying the former bail condition.
