Osun First Lady Empowers Women Farmers With Various Agricultural Commodities
The wife of Osun State Governor, Mrs Kafayat Oyetola on Tuesday empowered over 500 women farmers in the state with various agricultural commodities.
CityMirrorNews reports that the empowerment program is the second phase of the IleriOluwa Development Initiative Agricultural Program scheme.
CityMirrorNews reports that the NGO is owned and funded by the Wife of the Osun State Governor, Mrs Kafayat Oyetola.
The organisation, was founded to provide welfare, economic and empowerment services to the people and to complement government’s social investment programme aimed at banishing poverty, hunger and misery in the State.
Speaking during the presentation of various agricultural commodities to Women in Rural Communities, Mrs Oyetola said, the initiative was designed to serve as a catalyst to revive the lost glory of the agriculture sector.
She said the organisation has been executing masses-oriented programmes designed to lift people, particularly the women from the scourge of abject poverty.
Mrs. Kafayat who described agriculture as the central nerve of existence through which livelihood is guaranteed, said the Organisation would not rest on its oars to ensure that the State actualises its lofty dreams on the agriculture sector.
According to the President IleriOluwa Development Initiative, “the program is designed to assist low-income female farmers periodically with necessary inputs that will enhance their productivity in the farms, increase their yields and ensure food security for their families.
“The first phase of this program was held in January of the year 2019. I am happy to report here that the beneficiaries in that phase reported back tremendous positive impact of the IOD-Agricultural scheme intervention.
“All efforts to have this second phase in 2020 were blighted by the unexpected explosion of the coronavirus pandemic across the globe.
“The pandemic, as we all know, disrupted every aspect of life and development efforts. I thank God that finally the whole world and our State have been able to tame the surge.
“It is therefore gladdening that we are here again. We should however continue to exercise the appropriate non-pharmaceutical cautions in relation to the pandemic.
“The agricultural sector has always been the main pillar for the sustenance of humanity. Here in Nigeria, the current food situation has made this more of a need for us.
“The prices of foodstuffs in our markets demand that we produce more food for our people.
“The situation has underscored the fact that there is no time better than now to return to the land. We must guarantee food security for our people, ” she said.
She appreciated Governor Gboyega for the intensive efforts being devoted to improving agricultural productions on all fronts in this State.
She also urged the beneficiaries to take optimum advantage of the initiative for their individual and collective benefits.
Speaking, Governor Oyetola said that his Administration is committed to making Agriculture the bedrock and mainstay of the State’s socioeconomic development.
He said that the race to delivering food sufficiency and making Osun the food basket of the region was very much on course.
Governor Oyetola noted that the Administration had developed a modality to change the narrative, bring desired change and encourage people’s participation in agriculture.
The initiative according to the Governor was to encourage the farmers to get involved in the transformation of the fortune of the State through a realistic economic diversification process.
He said the State has set up a committee to coordinate, cultivate and rally the crop and livestock farmers across the State to ensure peace and deliver an enabling environment for farming and peaceful coexistence.
He commended his wife, the initiator of the programme, for complementing government’s efforts at repositioning agriculture in particular and making life more meaningful and worthwhile for the people in general.
“Ilerioluwa Development Initiative has become a critical part of the IleriOluwa Family, providing welfare, economic and empowerment services to the people and complementing our social investment programme aimed at banishing poverty, hunger and misery in the State.
“I owe loads of appreciation to the Initiative for its sustained interest in and support for our Administration. Indeed, the Initiative has a unique place in the Development Agenda of our Administration whose goal is to provide adequate, quality and equitable service to our people across the State.
“I must not forget to mention that this initiative is a welcome addition to the efforts of the First Lady to empower women and girls and make them productive members of the society.
“Today’s initiative, presentation of vegetable seeds, cassava stem, day-old chicks and other cash crops to Women in Rural Communities at her Women in Agriculture Empowerment, by the Ilerioluwa Development Initiative is unique in many respects:
“One, it complements the goal of our Administration to provide food security and food sufficiency. Two, it empowers women, creates jobs for them and makes them critical parts of our social economic development programme.
“Three, it banishes hunger and poverty at the family level across the State as every attempt at empowering women agriculturally, especially across the State, is targeted at feeding the State.
“Four, coming at a time when there are cries of looming food scarcity as a result of insecurity, today’s event is a way of supporting the plan of our Administration to get Osun out of the imminent food scarcity net.
“Five, the initiative is also a boost to the Federal Government’s Small and Medium Enterprises, which our Administration has imbibed and employed to empower the people.
“Six, it has set the pace for other groups to join government to empower the people and deliver prosperity to the people,” he added.
The Governor urged the beneficiaries of the initiative to make good use of the crops so as not only to ensure that the aim of the initiative is realised, but also to create an opportunity for other women to benefit from the programme.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Adedayo Adewole, commended the leadership of Ilerioluwa Development Initiative for their prompt intervention to turn around the fortune of agriculture and make life prosperous for farmers.
Adewole disclosed that over 1, 000 old chicks, 1, 000 cashew seedlings, 1, 000 cocoa seedlings and over 200 bundles of cassava had been set aside to be distributed to women farmers.
