Rumpus in Osun As Public School Students Plan Protest over mass failure in WAEC qualifying exam

Some students of High Schools in Osun State are planning a mass protest tomorrow (Monday, October 10) to protest ‘their failure’ in the qualifying examination for the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The unifying WAEC qualifying examination is a state government measure to select public schools students free WAEC exam in the state.

Over 35, 000 students participated in the exam which was held in all public high schools across the state between Monday, August 23 and Friday, August 27 this year.

CityMirrorNews learnt that only 7,000 students secured enough marks to make the cut of those that state government will assist to pay WAEC fees next year.

There are insinuations that those that failed the exam might have to retake the exam if they want free WAEC exam from the state government.

The mass failure in the exam has been generating rumpus in the public schools since the result was announced last Thursday.

 CityMirrorNews’s investigation revealed that students of Anglican High School, Kola Balogun Area of Osogbo started the protest last Friday, acting on the rumour that almost all the students that sat for the exam failed.

Officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, were quickly alerted and drafted to the school and students were hurriedly dismissed as the school closed early for the day.

However, reliable security sources, who confided in CityMirrorNews, said there was intelligence report that some students were planning to foment trouble in schools tomorrow-Monday.

According to the sources, security agencies have been put on alert in case of any eventuality.
Some of the students are claiming that the state government deliberated failed majority of them to limit the number of students that will benefit from the payment for WAEC.

CityMirrorNews recalled that some students attacked the Orisum Fm radio station in Ife early this year in protest against the mass failure in the WAEC qualification exam.

Some of the staff of the station were injured, while About nine vehicles including three official vehicles and one Toyota Camry belonging to an official of the Federal Road Safety Commission who was at the station for a programme were vandalized.
