Breaking News: INEC May Postpone Edo Governorship Election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) might postpone the September 10, 2016 governorship election in Edo State for security reasons.
Police and State Security Service have on Wednesday advised INEC to postpone the election because of security threat.
According to the security agencies, there is credible intelligence of a plot by insurgent and extremist elements to disrupt the poll.
The two agencies, in a joint press conference said the target of the attacks are vulnerable communities and soft targets with high population during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations between September 12 and 13.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the call for the postponement.
Clement Nwakwo, Coordinator of Nigeria Situation Room, opposed the postponement, saying that if such happens, it means there is interference in the electoral process.
INEC has not yet make decision on whether it would yield to the security call or not.
