Osun 2026: Osun Monarch Calls For Peace, Warns Against Political Violence
The Ọlẹẹgbẹ of Akingbade Ipoye Ife Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdul Yakeen Zakariyah Fakowajo Adekayaoja, has called on political actors, youths and residents of Osun State to embrace peace and reject violence as campaigns gather momentum ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The monarch made the appeal during an interview with journalists at his palace, expressing concern over the growing political tension in some parts of the state.
He urged all stakeholders to ensure that the election is conducted in an atmosphere of peace, unity and mutual respect.
Oba Fakowajo stressed that no political ambition should be allowed to threaten the peace and stability for which Osun State is known, noting that elections should serve as a platform for democratic participation rather than conflict.
He specifically warned young people against allowing themselves to be recruited by politicians to perpetrate violence, saying they often become the victims while those who sponsor unrest escape accountability.
“The future belongs to our youths, and they must not mortgage that future because of temporary political gains. Elections will come and go, but the peace of our communities must be preserved,” the traditional ruler said.
He urged political parties, governorship candidates and their supporters to conduct issue-based campaigns and demonstrate tolerance, civility and respect for opposing views throughout the electioneering period.
According to him, healthy political competition should never degenerate into violence, destruction of property or loss of lives, adding that peaceful coexistence remains the foundation for sustainable development.
The royal father also appealed to parents, religious leaders and fellow traditional rulers across the state to intensify efforts at sensitising young people on the importance of remaining law-abiding before, during and after the election.
Oba Fakowajo further commended security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the preparations already put in place for the governorship poll. He urged the agencies to remain professional, impartial and committed to delivering a free, fair and credible election.
Expressing optimism about the forthcoming poll, the monarch said he was confident that with the cooperation of all stakeholders, Osun State would once again reinforce its reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states by conducting a violence-free governorship election.
He also offered prayers for sustained peace, unity and development in Ile-Ife, Osun State and the country at large.
