Wave Of Defections Hits Reps: APC Leads Gains, ADC Strengthens Ranks
A fresh wave of defections in the House of Representatives has boosted the ranks of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the defections during plenary on Tuesday.
In total, 27 lawmakers switched parties in what marks one of the most significant shifts in the Green Chamber, less than a year before Nigerians head to the polls to elect a new set of leaders.
Of the defectors, eight lawmakers joined the ADC, including five from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), two from the Labour Party (LP), and one from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The APC recorded the highest number of gains, with 14 lawmakers defecting to the ruling party.
Meanwhile, the Action Peoples Party (APP) and the Accord Party each gained two members.
The APP’s new members came from the PDP and LP, while the Accord Party welcomed two lawmakers from the PDP, further strengthening its presence in Osun State.
The defecting lawmakers attributed their decisions to internal crises within their former parties.
