NGO Enrols Five Sickle Cell Warriors In Health Insurance, Reaches Over 400 People
A non-governmental organisation, The True-Life Projects Africa (TTLP Africa), has reached more than 400 people with sickle cell awareness and healthcare services in Osogbo, Osun State, under its SCAP September Care Initiative 2026.
The initiative, implemented through the organisation’s Sickle Cell Awareness and Promotion (SCAP) Project, also supported five vulnerable persons living with sickle cell disease with health insurance enrolment through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
The intervention was designed to promote sickle cell awareness, improve access to healthcare and enhance the wellbeing of affected individuals and their families.
During the community medical outreach, 75 people underwent genotype screening, while participants benefited from sickle cell counselling, health education, clinical consultations and essential medicines for common illnesses, including infections and non-communicable diseases.
The medical services catered to both adults and children, while participants requiring additional medical attention were referred to appropriate healthcare services.
Beyond the medical outreach, the organisation implemented its SCAP Warrior Wellness Initiative, which provided selected persons living with sickle cell disease and their caregivers with practical wellness kits.
The initiative also strengthened the SCAP Warrior Support Group, a platform designed to provide peer support, psychosocial assistance, health education and sustained engagement among people living with sickle cell disease.
Speaking on the initiative, the Executive Director of TTLP Africa, Dr Elijah Adodo, said the programme was designed to ensure that awareness translated into practical support and improved access to healthcare.
“We believe awareness becomes meaningful when people can act on the information they receive and access the support they need.
“Through this initiative, we brought medical services, wellness resources and health insurance support together to address different dimensions of the challenges faced by our communities, particularly people living with sickle cell disease,” Adodo said.
He described reaching more than 400 community members, conducting 75 genotype screenings and supporting five vulnerable beneficiaries with health insurance enrolment as significant milestones for the pilot initiative.
Adodo expressed appreciation to the organisation’s partners, healthcare professionals, volunteers and project team for their contributions to the success of the programme.
He added that the organisation was committed to building on the achievements of the pilot project and strengthening pathways to sustained healthcare for people living with sickle cell disease.
One of the beneficiaries’ parents, Mrs Alonge Mary, mother of Alonge Precious, expressed gratitude to the organisation for supporting her daughter with medication and health insurance enrolment.
“I want to appreciate this loving foundation for the heart of gold you have for the warriors. I sincerely thank you for counting my daughter worthy of the drugs and the NHIS enrolment.
“I pray that the Lord will bless you richly and that the organisation will continue to move forward,” she said.
TTLP Africa also pledged to extend its health insurance support to more vulnerable people living with sickle cell disease, while strengthening follow-up activities to monitor beneficiaries’ access to medical care.
The organisation said the follow-up mechanism would help assess the progress of beneficiaries, promote quality control and encourage effective healthcare service delivery.
It reiterated its commitment to expanding the initiative and appreciated its partners for their contributions towards improving healthcare access and support for people living with sickle cell disease.
