Osun 2026: Osogbo Indigenes rally support for Kunle Adegoke's gubernatorial ambition

Osogbo indigenes gathered in a peaceful rally on Wednesday, to demand that the next governor of Osun State hail from their town, emphasizing fairness and equity in the state’s political landscape.

The rally which was organized by the Osogbo Progressive Movement, claiming that as the administrative headquarters of Osun State has yet to produce a governor since the state’s creation.

Osogbo indigenes who converged at Ayetoro Junction, marching through Igbona Market, Old Garage, and down to Freedom Park, made a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed  Tinubu.

They urged the President to endorse Barrister Kunle Rasheed Adegoke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Osogbo native, as the gubernatorial flag bearer for the ruling party ahead of the 2026 elections.

A member of the Osogbo Progressive Movement, Adeagbo Suraj, articulated the group’s mission during the event.

“The purpose of our gathering is to tell the whole world that it is time for Osogbo to produce a governor,” Suraj said. He stressed that zoning the candidacy to Osogbo would “promote fairness, equity, and inclusion” while boosting voter turnout for the party in both the gubernatorial and presidential elections.

Suraj highlighted Adegoke’s readiness to lead, noting that he is “prepared to take the party to greater heights and secure victory.”

Drawing historical parallels, Babatunde Adebayo, a retiree and Osogbo indigene, referenced past political movements in Nigeria. “Let’s go to the memory of Ibadan during Olunloyo’s time, he became governor because Ibadan people asked for it,” Adebayo said.

He argued that Osogbo’s long silence on the issue had been misinterpreted, prompting the rally to break that perceived complacency.

“This time around, Osogbo wants to be the governor of Osun State. Osogbo deserves it.”

Abdulrasaq Usman echoed the call for support from the president, expressing gratitude to attendees and emphasizing Osogbo’s historical backing of non-indigenes.

“We’re pleading to our father, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that an Osogbo indigene should be the next governor of Osun State,” Usman said.

“We have been supporting other people that are not indigenes of Osogbo, and they’re successful. Now, Kunle Rasheed Adegoke is the indigene of Osogbo we want. It is time to give Osogbo indigenes the chance.” Usman said.

Abibat Adejare added a personal plea, urging Tinubu to support an Osogbo indigene for the governorship.

“We want an indigene of Osogbo to be the next governor of Osun State,He should help us support him.” She said.

The rally remained orderly, with no reported incidents, and participants dispersed peacefully after voicing their demands.
