Bode George Asks Tinubu to Reinstate Fubara As Rivers governor
Chief Bode George, who was once the Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on President Bola Tinubu to allow Siminalayi Fubara to return as Governor of Rivers State.
George made this appeal in an open letter on June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
This day marks the anniversary of the June 12, 1993 election, which was won by Chief M.K.O. Abiola but later cancelled by then military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida.
In his letter, George said that since June 12 is about democracy and respecting the will of the people, Tinubu should show mercy and forgive Fubara.
He explained that due to political problems and tensions in Rivers State, Tinubu suspended Governor Fubara and the state House of Assembly on March 18.
However, Fubara recently visited Tinubu in Lagos during the Sallah celebrations to pay his respects.
George pointed out that Tinubu had already forgiven Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State over past political issues and should do the same for Fubara. He said:
“June 12 reminds us that democracy is about allowing the people to choose their leaders freely.
If President Tinubu has forgiven Sanwo-Olu, then it is right for him to forgive Fubara too and let him return to his position as governor. I am saying this as an elder who wants peace in the country.”
George also praised Tinubu for the role he played in Nigeria’s return to democracy during the military era.
He reminded everyone that Tinubu was part of NADECO, a group that fought for the end of military rule in Nigeria, and that many of his fellow fighters have since died.
“Tinubu should thank God that he is still alive today. He should honour the memories of those who fought and died for democracy by bringing Fubara back to office as governor,” he said.
In addition, George appealed to Tinubu by referring to his own family history. He reminded Tinubu that his maternal grand uncle, Herbert Macaulay, was the person who formed Nigeria’s first political party in 1922.
“I am asking Tinubu to consider this request in memory of all the people who fought and died to bring democracy to Nigeria. Reinstating Fubara will show that he respects the sacrifices made by our heroes,”
George concluded.
