Electricity Tariff: Workers In Abuja Cripple Activities At NERC, TCN, Ministry Of Power

Workers drawn from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Monday crippled activities at the headquarters of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Transmission Company of Nigeria as well as the Ministry of Power in a picketing exercise to protest the increase in electricity tariff.

President of the NLC,.Comrade Joe Ajaero who led the exercise criticised government officials for failing to consult with Labour stakeholders before announcing the increase, even as he maintained that Nigerian workers and masses deserve access to a constant and affordable electricity supply.

He said, “On Wednesday, 3rd of April 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission announced an upward review of electricity tariffs for electricity consumers in Band A across the country.

“The new rate that was announced for this band of electricity consumers was N225 per kilowatt hour.

According to NERC, about 15 per cent of Nigeria’s population are in the Band A category of electricity consumers which are supposed to enjoy up to 20 hours of power supply daily.”
