Ikire Violence: Adeleke Sets Up Panel, Orders Probe Of Killings

• Panel To Sit Within Seven Days, Submit Report In 30 Days

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the killings, shootings, injuries and violence that occurred at Naira and Kobo Junction, Motor Park/Garage Area, Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, on August 24, 2026.

The Governor, through an Executive Order, established a Coroner Inquest/Panel of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the immediate and remote causes of the violence.

The panel is also mandated to establish the identities and number of victims and determine whether criminal responsibility is connected to any of the deaths.

The Executive Order, signed by the Governor, takes effect from August 31, 2026.

Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola has been appointed Chairman of the panel, while Mr Abiodun Badiora will serve as Secretary.

Other members are retired AIG (Dr) Aderanti C. Kayode, mni; Mr Dele Akintayo; a representative of the Nigerian Bar Association; Comrade Wale Balogun, representing Civil Society Organisations; a community representative from Ikire; and Dr Babatunde Afolabi, who will serve as the Medical/Forensic Representative.

Among other responsibilities, the panel is expected to investigate the circumstances leading to the shootings and deaths and examine the roles played by security operatives during the incident.

The panel according to a statement signed by the Governor spokesperson Mallam Olawale Rasheed and made available to journalists, will also determine whether live ammunition or other weapons were used, and whether their use complied with relevant laws, rules of engagement and human rights standards.

The panel has further been empowered to identify any individual or group whose action or omission may have contributed to the incident, including security personnel, political actors, transport union members, public officials and other persons connected with the events.

Where culpability is established, the panel may recommend criminal prosecution, disciplinary action, compensation for victims and families, as well as institutional reforms aimed at preventing a recurrence.

To facilitate its investigation, the panel will have powers to summon witnesses, request police and medical records, inspect the scene of the incident and other relevant locations, and receive oral and documentary evidence.

It may also recommend measures to protect witnesses, victims’ families and other persons considered vulnerable to intimidation or retaliation.

Governor Adeleke directed relevant authorities to preserve firearms and ammunition records, station diaries, communication logs, incident reports, duty rosters, medical records, autopsy reports, photographs, videos and other materials that may assist the inquiry.

The Executive Order also directs the authorities to take appropriate measures to protect witnesses and victims’ families, secure medical and forensic documentation and maintain peace in Ikire throughout the duration of the inquiry.

In a move aimed at protecting the integrity of the investigation and public confidence, the Governor formally requested the Inspector-General of Police, Police Service Commission and the Osun State Commissioner of Police to consider appropriate interim administrative measures concerning any police officer whose continued operational command could prejudice the inquiry.

The panel is expected to commence sitting within seven days of its inauguration and submit its final report to the Osun State Government within 30 days of its first sitting, subject to any extension approved by the Governor.

The state government has invited victims’ families, eyewitnesses, journalists, transport workers, police officers, medical personnel, civil society organisations, political parties, community leaders, human rights activists and other interested persons to submit memoranda and relevant evidence to the panel.

Governor Adeleke assured the people of Ikire, families of those killed, the injured and the general public that the incident would be thoroughly, fairly and transparently investigated.

The Executive Order further stated that no person found culpable would be shielded from justice, regardless of status, position, political connection or institutional affiliation.

It, however, stressed that all allegations remain allegations until established by credible evidence before the Coroner Inquest/Panel.
