Nigeria Needs Greater Accountability in Resource Management — Osogbo ICAN Chairman

-As Osogbo ICAN Holds 6th Investiture

The newly inaugurated chairman of the Osogbo and District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Mr. Samuel Aigbokhai Momodu, has called on governments at all levels to prioritise professional advice and strengthen accountability in the management of public resources.

Momodu made the call on Saturday during his investiture as chairman of the district society for the 2026/2027 administrative year at Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State.

The chartered accountant said professional bodies such as ICAN possess the expertise required to support effective governance, prudent resource management and sustainable development, urging public office holders to take advantage of the knowledge and recommendations available within the profession.

According to him, accountants play a vital role in ensuring transparency, accountability and equitable distribution of resources for the benefit of society.

“ICAN can advise and provide suggestions on ways the country can move forward, but implementation rests with those in executive positions. Government should continue to encourage ICAN and its members by taking advantage of the expertise available within the profession,” he said.

Momodu also pledged to strengthen the Osogbo and District Society and position it among leading ICAN districts in the country through collaboration, professional development and active participation of members.

He urged members to support the newly inaugurated executive committee, noting that the district possesses the potential to become a model for others across the country.

“I encourage members to continue to cooperate with the executive so that together we can move the district to greater heights. Though we may be small, our future is bright and we have the potential to become a model district within ICAN,” he added.

Representing the 62nd President of ICAN at the event, Mr. Abiodun Adedeji, FCA, congratulated Momodu and members of the newly inaugurated executive committee, charging them to uphold the institute’s culture of integrity, professionalism and accuracy.

Adedeji also disclosed that Osogbo is being considered for the siting of a regional office of ICAN, a development he said would further strengthen the institute’s operations and presence in the region.

He urged the new leadership to remain good ambassadors of the institute and contribute to the advancement of the accounting profession.

In her valedictory speech, the immediate past chairman of the district, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Adebowale Obalade, highlighted achievements recorded during her tenure, including professional capacity-building programmes, stakeholder engagement initiatives and expanded career awareness campaigns for students.

She said the district increased its “Catch Them Young” outreach programme to 12 secondary schools across Osun State to encourage young people to embrace careers in accounting.

Obalade also noted that members were exposed to emerging developments in taxation, savings and investment through regular technical sessions, while health awareness programmes were organised to address mental health challenges among professionals.

She thanked members and executive committee officials for their support throughout her tenure, describing the achievements recorded as products of teamwork and collective dedication.

Speaking at the ceremony, a former chairman of the district, Chief Olatunbosun Titus Akinwumi, FCA, described Momodu as a dependable and hardworking professional whose years of service earned him the confidence of members.

According to Akinwumi, Momodu’s emergence as chairman was a reflection of his commitment to the growth and development of the institute.

“He is highly dependable, reliable and hardworking. When you give him an assignment, you can go to sleep with your two eyes closed. He is a silent achiever who has contributed immensely to the growth of the district,” he said.

The Social and Publicity Secretary of the district, Mr. Oluseyi Kayode Faniran, described the investiture as a significant milestone for the society, expressing confidence that the new leadership would build on existing achievements and further enhance the district’s contributions to the accounting profession.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Shadrach Olufemi Akindele, commended ICAN for its contributions to professional development and national growth through the training of accountants and financial experts.

He stressed the need for integrity, competence and accountability in both public and private institutions, urging professionals to continue upholding ethical standards in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The ceremony also featured the swearing-in of the 2026/2027 executive committee members and attracted accounting professionals, past district chairmen, ICAN members and guests from across the country.
