Tragedy As Over 24 Die In Ondo Community, Authorities Probe Mysterious Illness
Tragedy has struck parts of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, where more than 24 people have reportedly died following a mysterious illness suspected to be linked to substances consumed by residents.
Several other residents who reportedly fell ill are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals, as authorities commence efforts to establish the cause of the deaths.
The affected communities include Araromi-Obu, Orita New Town and Odigbo, where residents have expressed concern over the development and the safety of products commonly consumed in the area.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Odigbo Local Government Area, Taiwo Adegoroye, said he could not give further details until medical experts had visited the affected communities and conducted a professional assessment.
Adegoroye, however, disclosed that the council had taken precautionary measures to prevent further deaths, including restrictions on the sale and consumption of sachet herbal concoctions and similar drinks being hawked in the affected communities.
The reported deaths have raised concerns over the consumption of unregulated herbal preparations and other substances sold in sachets, particularly in rural communities where such products are widely patronised.
Authorities are expected to conduct medical examinations and laboratory analyses to determine the actual cause of the deaths and illnesses.
The tests are also expected to establish whether poisoning occurred and, if so, identify the substance responsible for the reported deaths and illnesses.
Meanwhile, residents of the affected communities have been advised to exercise caution and avoid consuming suspicious herbal concoctions, unverified sachet products and other substances of uncertain origin pending the outcome of the investigation.
The authorities are expected to provide further updates once the medical and laboratory investigations are concluded.
