Ekiti 2026: INEC Begins Distribution Of Sensitive Materials
In preparation for Saturday’s Ekiti State governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday received sensitive materials for distribution to all 16 Local Government Areas of the state.
Speaking with journalists at the distribution point, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, stated that the exercise was being carried out in the presence of representatives of political parties and civil society organisations to ensure transparency.
His words:
“What we are actually witnessing is the sorting of both sensitive and non-sensitive materials and their distribution to the various local government areas. As stated by INEC, we are starting with the largest local government area from here.
“We have police officers who will escort these materials from here to all the local government headquarters.
“Today, the police officers will be on guard to protect all these materials. By tomorrow, we expect the movement of the materials from the various local government headquarters to the Registration Area Centres (RACs). From the RACs, they will be moved to the polling units where they will be used on Saturday.”
The REC also called on the electorate to come out en masse and exercise their franchise by voting for candidates of their choice.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of the election, CP Abayomi Shogunle, assured residents of adequate security to ensure a peaceful and incident-free election.
“We are putting plans in place to ensure that these materials arrive safely at all designated polling units across the state by Saturday morning to enable the commencement of voting at the stipulated time.
“We have considered different inputs. Apart from our intelligence reports, we have also considered risk assessments carried out by various stakeholders.
“We have put in place adequate measures to address the issues and concerns that people have raised. Let me state here that the operational order approved by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, is based on a multi-layered security framework. We have identified different threats and are putting in place measures to address them.
“Multi-layered in the sense that different security measures have been put in place. What I am trying to say is that we have made adequate arrangements, including in areas I may not want to disclose, to ensure that this election is conducted freely, peacefully, and without any ugly incidents,” the CP said.
