Labour, Olawepo-Hashim Unite As Democratic Movement Takes Off
Organised labour, civil society leaders, politicians, youth groups, women leaders and pro-democracy advocates joined forces Wednesday with Accord’s presidential candidate, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, for the formal launch of the Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR) in Abuja.
The attendees pledged their support for democratic renewal and national development.
Addressing the gathering, Olawepo-Hashim said the movement was formed to defend democracy, strengthen institutions and ensure that governance remains responsive to the needs and aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.
He commended workers, youth groups, women leaders and civil society actors for their unwavering commitment to democratic values and nation-building.
“Our democracy should be truly representative through free and fair elections. Workers must not be left behind in the democratic process,” the presidential candidate said.
Olawepo-Hashim warned that rising inflation and depreciation of the naira were steadily eroding workers’ earnings.
He noted that wage increases become meaningless when purchasing power continues to decline.
The Presidential hopeful advocated policies aimed at stabilising the naira, boosting productivity, expanding local production and strengthening energy security through increased domestic refining capacity.
He also called for deeper collaboration among labour, civil society and progressive political forces, stressing that organised labour has historically played a central role in Nigeria’s democratic struggles.
“Labour and progressive leaders must continue to work hand in hand to protect democracy and advance the interests of the people,” Olawepo-Hashim added.
He also expressed concern over the security situation in the country and called for stronger measures to safeguard lives and property.
Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) council of Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC), Steven Nabayi, said labour was partnering Olawepo-Hashim because of his credibility, integrity and long-standing commitment to democratic practice in the country.
Nabayi, who represented the congress President Joe Ajaero, said labour recognised Hashim as a dependable partner in advancing democratic values, defending workers’ rights and promoting accountable governance.
“We need such a movement because things are not going the right way in the country. Nigerians need good governance, and wherever we see initiatives that promote good governance, we are part of them,” he said.
The organisers described MDR as a coalition of trade unionists, political actors, civil society groups and citizens committed to democratic inclusion, electoral integrity, social justice, constitutionalism and the rule of law.
They explained that the movement was established in response to concerns over shrinking civic space, weakening democratic institutions and declining public confidence in the electoral process.
The organisers expressed confidence that the initiative would strengthen democratic accountability and contribute to building a more inclusive, secure and prosperous Nigeria.
Olawepo-Hashim and Ajaero are co-chairmen of the movement.
