LG Autonomy: CDHR, ALGON, Others Hail Supreme Court Judgement

Chairman, Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), Osun state chapter, Comrade Emmanuel Olowu, has described the Supreme Court judgment on the Local Government’s financial autonomy as fantastic.

While reacting to the judgment in an interview in Osogbo, Osun State capital, he said, if Nigerians are democratically and politically conscious they, should have been on the streets for celebration.

The right activist posited “Had it been we are in a country where the citizens are politically conscious, and political parties understand ideas behind the existence of a political party, everyone one of us should be on the streets to celebrate this judgment by now.

“Because when we are talking about the development of the people, development has to come from the grassroots.

“As we speak today, most of the functions of the local Government have been hijacked

“In that judgment also, it’s said that allocation should not go to any state government that does not have elected Local Government Chairmen/

“It’s a fantastic judgment. As a democratic conscious people, had it been we were democratically conscious, we should have gone to the streets to celebrate that judgment.

Also, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, Sarafa Awotunde described the judgment as a welcome development.

He said the association is happy with the judgment.

Speaking through Ojuolape Odetola, his Chief Press Secretary, Awotunde said, “Governor Ademola Adeleke is always interested in what will bring developments to all the Local Government.

“We are happy with the judgment and ready to make sure that the pronouncement is realised in Osun State.”

Also, Charles Adeyemi, a politician commended the Supreme Court of Nigeria for upholding its responsibility as the ultimate refuge for the common man.

Adeyemi, the Executive Director of Charleston Foundation For Youth Development, Osogbo, stated that the Supreme Court’s verdict reveals that with time, change is inevitable.
