An ace broadcaster and Nigerian former ambassador to the Philippines, Dr. Yemi Farounbi has urged school leavers to start preparing for what they want to become in future right from their school days, saying, this is the only antidote to unemployment bane in Nigeria.

He said, lack of employment opportunities is the major problem confronting the nation, stressing that, employment education should be given to school leavers right from their school days.

Farounbi stated this during a stakeholders meeting and presentation of a book tagged “Employment education, the new imperative”

The meeting was organised by an NGO, From School To Work Africa (FROSTOW) in collaboration with the Osun State Ministry of Education, in Osogbo on Thursday and had the who is who in the education sector in Osun state in attendance.

According to him, every school leaver should start preparing for work after school from elementary stage, adding that, skill acquisition should be embedded in every school curriculum to allow school leavers, not only to be self reliant, but to be able to practicalized what they have been taught in the school.

He implored government at all levels to give priority to teaching of skill acquisition in schools so that unemployment would be drastically reduced.

While speaking, the vocal person for FROSTOW, Prince Abiodun Lufadeju said the major cause of unemployment in Nigeria is lack of employment education.

He said, what the society needed is a change of perspective on the issue of work after school.

Lufadeju noted that, the book, “From School to Work” is a concept borne out of the passion to educate the school leavers on entrepreneurship, skill acquisition and employability which are the key to transform what the students leant in the school to practicals.

He stressed that the essence of the program is to give a new mode of thinking, about the type of education they deliver to their children, so they can begin to learn how to answer the question of employment when they leave school.

He noted that, the aspect of thinking on how to translate the result given to students after school to employment opportunity is lost as the teacher only taught them how to pass their examination.

He said schools should be institutions that teaches students how to solve problems of livelihood and not for presenting results alone.
