Declaration Of June 12 As Democracy Day: AGF Applauds President Buhari
A sociopolitical organization, Asiwaju Grassroots Foundation (AGF), Osun State chapter on Friday joined other progressive minded Nigerians to appreciate President Mohammed Buhari for declaring June 12th as Democracy Day to commemorate the winner of that election, Late. MKO Abiola.
The group also congratulated governor Rauf Aregbesola who it said his stance on June 12 as Democracy Day was eventually justified by President Buhari’s declaration of the day as Nigeria’s democracy day.
In a press statement issued by the group’s Coordinator Comrade Sikiru Tijani and Secretary, Comrade Yahaya Adeniji , AGF hailed the President’s declaration, pointing out that late Chief MKO Abiola died in the struggle for the emancipation and freedom of the people.
The group further explained that the declaration, amongst other things, has brought back relief to the children and other families of late MKO Abiola.
According to the group, Buhari’s recognition of MKO Abiola has given hope to comrades who have been at the fore front of the struggle.
“Abiola’s sacrifice eventually gave birth to the democracy we are all enjoying today, also encouraged everyone to play roles that will sustain the country’s democracy.
“We want to use this opportunity to congratulate our principal, the amiable governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola for the aim accomplished.”
“Governor Aregbesola have had a strong conviction that “June 12, 1993 was the day democracy was born in Nigeria and has been annually addressing the day as such since he assumed office.”
“Aregbesola’s stance on June 12 as Democracy Day has been justified by President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of the day as Nigeria’s democracy day, against May 29 and honouring the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election a posthumous award of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
AGF said for the holiday and the award to take meaningful effect, the legislative arms of government must be carried along to effect all necessary constitutional adjustments.
