APC Chieftain, Fatai Diekola Was Arrested For Violence- Police Commissioner

The Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Fimihan Adeoye, on Thursday said the arrest of the Chieftain of All Progressive Congress, (APC), Alhaji Fatai Diekola by the state police command has no political undertone.

While fielding questions from journalists over the update of the arrest, Adeoye said the arrest was part of the police responsibilities to ensure peace and stability in the state.

Diekola was on Monday arrested alongside with five others in connection with alleged political violence recorded before the just concluded Osun West Senatorial By-election in the state.

It was reported that Diekola honour the police invitation after two weeks the Command had invited him for interrogation, a development which led to his arrest on Monday when he finally showed up at the state Police Headquarters in Osogbo.

Diekola, who stormed the Police Headquarters in a convoy filled with his loyalists, was arrested and detained for allegedly constituting nuisance and charged for public disturbance and breach of public peace.

There were insinuations making the round that the arrest of the Osogbo-born politician was politically orchestrated.

But in his reaction to the matter, CP Adeoye debunked the insinuation, saying the arrest of the suspects were not in any way politically motivated.

He said Diekola and others were arrested based on the facts gathered by the command on the suspects, saying the arrest was made in accordance with the law.

When asked if the state government has hand in the arrest, Adeoye said no one orders the command to arrest the suspects as the command is doing its constitutional duties of maintaining law and order and preventing any breach of law.

According to him, “It is unfortunate that people are insinuating about political motivation of the arrest relevance and over-flogging this matter. Any arrest made by the police is not for any individual’s interest but rather in the interest of justice and fairness.

“Any arrest made does not matter about the individual’s socio-economic status, group or political party he or she belongs to.

“People should stop over-floogging this matter. When an individual commits an offence, such person will be dealt with in accordance with the law irrespective of his status or political affiliation.

“Nobody orders the Command to arrest anyone. We are carrying out our statutory responsibility. We should know when an individual commits an offence. The political status of such person does not matter. What matters is to allow the law to take its due course.

The police in the state ‎has been doing its work with utmost sense of professionalism and we are committed to that cause”, Adeoye said.
