World Press Freedom Day: C’River Govt Declares Support For Journalists, Independent Media

Against the backdrop of the celebration of World Press Day globally, the Cross River State Government has committed itself to protecting Journalists in the state.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Dr Erasmus Ekpang, this commitment is to support Journalists and independent media as they join the global community to mark the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, with the Commissioner for Information, Dr Erasmus Ekpang, applauding journalists for their vital role in society.

In a statement issued on Sunday, May 3, Ekpang congratulated media professionals across the state and beyond, describing the annual observance, instituted by the United Nations under UNESCO, as an opportunity to highlight the importance of a free and independent press in promoting human rights, security, and sustainable development.

Anchoring his message on this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” the Commissioner emphasised that journalists remain central to building societies founded on truth, justice, and harmony. He noted that the media serves as a critical bridge between government and the people, while also acting as the voice of the voiceless.

Ekpang particularly commended journalists in Cross River State for their resilience, professionalism, and commitment to ethical reporting despite prevailing challenges, adding that their work continues to strengthen democratic governance and inspire public confidence.

Reaffirming the position of the “People First” administration, Ekpang stated that Governor Bassey Edet Otu remains committed to creating a conducive environment for journalists to operate freely and responsibly.

“The government will continue to support journalists and the Nigeria Union of Journalists as partners in the development of Cross River State,” he said, stressing the need for sustained collaboration in advancing the collective interest of the state.

He further urged journalists to remain steadfast in upholding integrity and professionalism, encouraging them to keep their voices strong in shaping a peaceful and progressive society.

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on May 3 to promote the fundamental principles of press freedom and assess the state of media independence worldwide.
