PDP BoT Assumes Leadership After Supreme Court Nullifies Convention
The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has assumed leadership of the party following a Supreme Court judgment that invalidated its recent national convention.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the BoT said its decision was in line with the provisions of the PDP constitution to prevent a leadership vacuum at the national level.
The apex court had nullified the party’s national convention held from November 15 to 16, 2025, in Ibadan, which produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee.
The Supreme Court also upheld the suspension of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Hon. Umar Bature and Kamaldeen Ajibade, who served as national secretary, national organising secretary and national legal adviser, respectively.
According to the BoT, the ruling renders all actions taken by the affected officials, including the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as acting national chairman and the formation of a caretaker committee, null and void.
The board said the development effectively dissolves both the Turaki-led and Abdulrahman Mohammed-led leadership structures, thereby placing responsibility for the party’s leadership on the BoT as the second highest organ under the party’s constitution.
It disclosed that it would immediately take over the party’s affairs and convene an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee to appoint an interim National Working Committee to manage the party’s operations. “Consequently, all staff of the PDP are hereby directed to resume at the National Secretariat of the Party under the leadership of the BoT ahead of the appointment of the Interim National Working Committee,” the statement read.
While commending the effort and resilience of governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, as well as the National Assembly caucus, the BoT called on members and leaders to set aside differences and work towards unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
