Wike Under Fire For ‘Reckless’ Comment About Journalist On Live TV
Amnesty International has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over a comment he allegedly made about a journalist during a live TV interview.
In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, the human rights organisation described Wike’s statement as dangerous. It warned that such remarks could encourage attacks on journalists.
According to Amnesty International, Wike reportedly said, “If there’s any way to break the screen, I would have shot him…” The group said this kind of statement raises serious concerns about the safety of journalists and press freedom in Nigeria.Nigeria Investment Guide
The organisation described the comment as reckless and violent. It added that when a senior government official speaks this way, it could make violence against journalists seem acceptable.
Amnesty International also said the remark goes against Nigeria’s broadcasting rules, which are meant to guide what people say on air. It noted that the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission should ensure such standards are followed.Nigeria Investment Guide
The group further stated that the comment was unlawful and unacceptable, especially coming from a top government official.
Amnesty International called on Wike to take back his statement and apologise, stressing that public officials must be careful with their words.
“Mr Wike must withdraw his violent statement immediately and apologise,” the organisation said.
