Christmas: ASUSS President, Adigun Rejoices With Christians
-Lauds Members Of Union’s Dedication, Sacrifices In Year 2025
The President of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Comrade Sola Adigun, has felicitated with members of the union nationwide on the occasion of the Christmas celebration and the forthcoming New Year, commending their dedication and sacrifices in the outgoing year.
In his goodwill message, Comrade Adigun said, “Christmas offers us an opportunity to reflect on our shared values of service, sacrifice, and hope, and I sincerely appreciate ASUSS members for their unwavering commitment to teaching and moulding students despite daunting challenges.”
He described teachers as critical to national development, noting that “secondary school teachers remain at the heart of character formation, academic excellence, and nation-building, often working under conditions that do not reflect the importance of their responsibilities.”
The ASUSS President acknowledged the Federal Government’s interventions in the education sector, stating that “some policies aimed at improving infrastructure, teacher capacity, and curriculum delivery are commendable and should be sustained and strengthened.”
He also urged governments at all levels to ensure the full and unconditional implementation of the Teachers Service Year Elongation Act, stressing that “this Act must be implemented in its entirety without ambiguity, as it is crucial to retaining experienced teachers and strengthening the stability of our education system.”
Comrade Adigun further praised state governments that have demonstrated commitment to education, saying, “States that prioritise teachers’ welfare through prompt salary payment, settlement of promotion arrears, and improved learning environments deserve recognition, as these actions directly impact educational outcomes.”
However, he expressed concern over persisting inadequacies, noting that “underfunding, overcrowded classrooms, poor facilities, and inconsistent policy execution continue to undermine effective teaching and learning in many parts of the country.”
Addressing the issue of insecurity, the ASUSS President expressed deep appreciation for the safe return of previously kidnapped students, stating, “We thank God and appreciate the collective efforts that led to the rescue of abducted students, but these painful incidents must never become normalised in our society.”
He called for urgent improvement in school security nationwide, emphasising that “as schools prepare to resume after the holidays, governments must take decisive steps to guarantee the safety of staff and students through enhanced security architecture and proactive intelligence.”
Comrade Adigun urged ASUSS members to remain united and professional, concluding, “I wish all ASUSS members a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year, with the hope that the coming year will bring better policies, improved security, full respect for teachers’ rights, and renewed commitment to quality education across Nigeria.”
