The Lagos State Government has denied involvement in the alleged demolition of a property said to belong to the brother of former presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, describing the claim as “baseless” and “disturbing.”

In a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, dismissed Obi’s allegations, insisting that neither the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) nor any other arm of the state government carried out such demolition.

“We wish to categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other arm of the Lagos State Government did not carry out the said demolition,” Omotoso declared.

Backing the rebuttal, the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS & Urban Development, Dr Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, who directly supervises LASBCA, also confirmed the agency’s non-involvement.

“Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde has confirmed that the agency was not involved in the demolition,” the statement read.

The government expressed dismay that Obi, a prominent political figure and former Governor of Anambra State, would issue such claims without proper verification.

“We find it disturbing that Mr Peter Obi would make such allegations without verifying the facts,” the Commissioner said.

Reiterating its commitment to the rule of law, the Lagos State Government warned that it would not condone any illegal activities, while vowing to bring perpetrators of lawlessness to book.

“We will not tolerate any acts of lawlessness or violations of extant laws. Any individual or group found involved in such acts will be brought to justice,” the government stated.

To establish the true circumstances behind the demolition, the government said it has ordered a thorough investigation.

The Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, has been directed to engage LASBCA for a full inquiry.

“We have directed the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki… to request a full investigation by the Lagos State Building Control Agency into this matter,” the statement added.

The state government appealed to the public to disregard Obi’s claims, maintaining that its administration remains focused on safeguarding residents and promoting lawful development.

“We urge the public to disregard Mr. Peter Obi’s claims and rest assured that the Lagos State Government will continue to work tirelessly to maintain law and order in our great state,” Omotoso said.

He further reaffirmed Lagos State’s openness and inclusivity, noting: “The Lagos State Government welcomes everyone to live and work in the state, and we assure all residents of our continued commitment to their safety and well-being.”
