The suspected mastermind in the failed plot to detonate a dynamite at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt has been arrested at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital while seeking medical attention.

Recall that there was an explosion in front of Hotel Presidential on Tuesday during a protest march by politicians and their supporters demanding the continued presence of the police at the state’s 23 local government secretariats.

The Rivers State government thereafter declared wanted the man who attempted to detonate an explosive near Hotel Presidential and sustained severe injuries, but assumed to be dead after he was quickly taken away from the scene.

The Commissioner for Health, Adaeze Oreh, believing that the suspect may seek treatment at public or private hospitals, called for the arrest of any patient with injuries suspected to be caused by explosives, urging healthcare providers to detain and report such person to the police or the state Ministry of Health.

Less than 24 hours after the Health commissioner made the call, the failed bomber was arrested at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, after he had claimed to have suffered a road traffic accident.

Oreh, who confirmed the arrest last night said that after the alert to healthcare providers to watch out for anybody injured with the features of explosion, the medical personnel at the facility alerted the authorities.

She said that the suspect’s injuries were in tandem with the features of an explosion and was brought into the facility half conscious but was resuscitated by the medical personnel who she said alerted the health ministry, and the police.

“He is currently stable, we are working in tandem with the Rivers State Police Command. And so the hospital has been fully secured, the perimeter and the patient is undergoing medical treatment.

“He is stable and the police is doing their own part in carrying out the necessary investigation. So, we just wish to update the public with this information.”
