Yoruba Nollywood Mourns As Atinuke Kareem Dies Of Breast Cancer

The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Yoruba actress, Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, popularly known as Atinuke Kareem.

Kareem reportedly died on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.

The sad development was announced by the Ogun State Governor of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), Owolabi Ajasa, in a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon.

Ajasa disclosed that efforts were made by colleagues, friends and members of the public to support the actress financially and spiritually during her illness.

He expressed appreciation to everyone who contributed towards her treatment, noting that despite the collective efforts and prayers, the actress eventually passed away.

He said, “We sincerely appreciate everyone who contributed financially, offered prayers, encouragement, and support towards the treatment of our dear colleague, Atinuke Remilekun Kareem.

“Sadly, despite all our efforts and prayers, Atinuke has passed on and answered the final call.

“We cannot question the Almighty God. We can only submit to His will and pray that He grants her eternal rest and gives her family, colleagues and loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss.”

The actress’ death came about four months after she reportedly appealed to members of the public for financial assistance to enable her continue treatment for breast cancer.

Her demise has since triggered mourning among colleagues and other stakeholders in the Yoruba movie industry, who have continued to remember her contribution to Nollywood.

The death adds to a growing list of losses that have recently plunged the Nigerian entertainment industry into mourning.
