BREAKING: Ex-Edo PDP Chairman, Dan Orbih, Dies At 64

Former Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Osi Orbih, has died at the age of 64.

Orbih, who also served as PDP National Vice Chairman, South-South, reportedly died on Monday, August 31, 2026.

He was, until his death, the Chairman of the Governing Board of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State.

The death of the veteran politician was announced by the family in a statement signed by Francis Orbih on behalf of the family.

The family said it received the development “with profound sadness and a heavy heart but in total submission to the will of the Almighty God.”

It urged relatives, friends and well-wishers to remember the family in their prayers as they mourned the loss.

“At this difficult time, we ask family members, friends and well-wishers to remember the entire family in their prayers as we mourn this painful loss,” the statement said.

The family added that details of the funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.

Orbih was a major figure in Edo politics, having served as chairman of the PDP in the state during the administration of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole and the first term of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.

He later became the party’s National Vice Chairman, South-South, where he played a prominent role in the affairs of the opposition party.

Reacting to his death, former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, described Orbih as a prominent Edo son and an influential voice in Nigerian politics.

Obaseki, in a condolence message, said he received the news with “profound sadness”, noting that Orbih contributed significantly to the growth of the PDP in Edo State and Nigeria.

He said: “Chief Orbih was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and an influential voice in Edo State. For many years, he provided leadership to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State as its State Chairman and subsequently served as the PDP National Vice Chairman, South-South.

“Through these roles, he contributed significantly to the development of the party in Edo State and Nigeria.”

According to Obaseki, Orbih’s long years of participation in public affairs earned him an important place in the political history of Edo State.

He described his death as “a significant loss to the state and the nation.”

The former governor condoled with Orbih’s wife, children, family members, friends, political associates and colleagues, praying that they would find the strength to bear the loss.

“I particularly sympathise with his wife, children and loved ones at this difficult time,” Obaseki said.
