KWHA Commends Gov Abdulfatai on State Media Houses

The Kwara State House of Assembly has commended GovAbdul Fatah Ahmed for his commitment towards repositioning the three state owned media houses.

Chairman, House Committee on Information, Youth, Sports, Tourism and Culture, Hon. Saheed  Popoola made the commendation during the appearance of the State Commissioner for Information, Sole Administrator and other chief executives of the media houses  before the legislators to defend their 2017 budget estimates.

Popoola explained with delight that the current repositioning of the media outfits by the state government would go along way to make them respond to contemporary challenges and compete favourably with other media outfits in the country.

He  assured that the legislature would give the needed support in realising the vision of the state Governor in the information sector, stressing that information dissemination was germane  to any vibrant democracy.

The State Commissioner for Information and Communication Alhaji Mahmud Babatunde Ajeigbe expressed confidence that his ministry would achieve its N115m revenue target, if the required logistics and infrastructure are provided for his Ministry and its agencies by the state government.

The Sole Administrator of the  Media Houses and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Communication, Dr. Muideen Akorede had enumerated the efforts of the state government towards repositioning the media houses for effective performance.

He, however, identified the current devaluation of the naira as a major challenge impeding the delivery of state of art equipment for the media organizations and solicited the support of the legislature in transforming the vision of the state Governor of repositioning the state owned media outfits, for better performance  into reality.

Meanwhile, the house says it will ensure that the construction of road leading to Owu fall in Owa Kajola was accommodated in this year’s budget to enable the state realised its tourism potentials.

This followed the presentation by the Permanent Secretary of Ministry  of Culture and Tourism Dr. Rhoda Ajiboye that the State was endowed with enough tourism potentials to make the state self sustaining, but were yet to be tapped, due to lack of basic infrastructure and required logistics in the identified tourism sites.

The Kwara State House of Assembly has enjoined Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the State to harness revenue potentials of the state to make the state less dependent on federal allocation for survival.

The Chairman House Committee on Land , Housing and Urban Development Hon. Adamu Usman made the call in Ilorin, during budget defence of the ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Usman who noted that the ministry had performed well in revenue generation last year with N1.283bn, said other MDAs in the state should emulate the ingenuity of the Ministry to enable the state government embark on more developmental projects, which according to him, would enhance the well-being of the people of the State.

In his own submission, the Chairman House Committee on Education and Human Capital Development Hon Jimoh Akanni Abdul Rahman called for upward review of fund for capital projects in the state owned College of Health Technology Offa and College of Nursing Oke Ode to enable the affected institutions meet up with the requirements of National Board for Technical Education and Nigerian Nursing Council.

Hon. Akanni Abdul Rahman said the allocation of N69m for capital projects in College of Health Technology Offa was  inadequate and said the committee resolved that the sum of  N88m would be needed by the institution this year  to construct classrooms,administrative block, college clinic, 5 blocks of VIP toilets/ latrine and  furniture to make the College satisfies the  requirements for accreditation by NBTE.

The Legislator assured the House would ensure that the two institutions meet  the requirements for accreditation for the benefit of the people of the state.

The Chairman of the Committee called for even construction of block of classrooms across the 24 constituencies in the state also urged the state Ministry  of Education and Human Capital Development to properly monitor the revenue potentials of the establishment of private institutions in the state
