Teachers’ Day: Foundation Calls For Improved Welfare, Dignity For Teachers
The Olusegun Elijah Olasunkanmi Foundation has congratulated teachers across Nigeria on the occasion of this year’s Teachers’ Day, describing them as indispensable nation-builders whose contributions to the development of society deserve greater recognition and reward.
The Foundation, in a goodwill message signed by its Founder, Mr. Olusegun Elijah Olasunkanmi, called on governments at all levels to prioritise the welfare of teachers by improving their salaries, working conditions and other incentives.
Olasunkanmi said teachers play a critical role in shaping the intellectual, moral and social development of children and young people, stressing that the future of Nigeria largely depends on the quality of education provided in schools.
«“Teachers are the foundation upon which every profession and every society is built. Before we can produce doctors, engineers, lawyers, journalists, entrepreneurs and leaders, there must first be teachers who nurture and equip them with knowledge,” he said.»
He noted that while teachers are often celebrated for their sacrifices and dedication, much more needs to be done to translate such appreciation into concrete policies that improve their living and working conditions.
According to him, “It is not enough to celebrate teachers once a year with speeches and commendations. Their welfare must be reflected in their salaries, allowances, housing, healthcare, training opportunities and other benefits that will give them the dignity they deserve.”
The Foundation urged the Federal Government, state governments and local authorities to ensure that teachers receive competitive and timely remuneration, while also providing conducive classrooms, teaching materials and opportunities for regular professional development.
Olasunkanmi further appealed to governments to introduce sustainable welfare programmes that would motivate teachers and attract more young, talented Nigerians into the teaching profession.
«“If we want quality education, we must invest in the people who deliver it. A teacher who is adequately paid, respected and supported will be better positioned to give his or her best to the students,” he stated.»
He also called on parents, communities, private organisations and other stakeholders to support teachers and educational institutions, stressing that education should not be left entirely to government.
The Founder commended teachers who continue to work under challenging circumstances, describing their commitment and sacrifices as a significant contribution to national development.
He said the Olusegun Elijah Olasunkanmi Foundation would continue to support initiatives that promote education, empower young people and improve the wellbeing of vulnerable members of society.
“On this Teachers’ Day, we celebrate every teacher who wakes up each morning with the determination to shape another generation. We appreciate your sacrifices, your patience and your commitment. Nigeria owes you a debt of gratitude, but beyond gratitude, you deserve better welfare and a rewarding career,” Olasunkanmi said.
He therefore urged governments to make teachers’ welfare a priority and ensure that the profession receives the respect, investment and remuneration required to build a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
