Woman, 45, Remanded For Inflicting Injuries On 12-year Old Girl

The Ondo State Police Command has arraigned a 45-year-old woman, Zainab Suleiman before a Magistrate Court sitting in Akure for inflicting injuries on a 12 years old girl, Victoria Williams.

The accused person, Zainab, who was arraigned by the Police was said to have committed the offence on 31 January, 2020 at Oke-Odu area along Ipinsa road, Akure by using her fingernails to inflict injuries all over the body of the girl, (Victoria).

The charge sheet reads, “That you Zainab Suleiman on the 31 January, 2020 at Oke-Odu via Ipinsa, Akure did unlawfully assault one Victoria Williams aged 12 year old by using your fingernails to inflict injuries all over her body and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 355 of the criminal code cap 37 vol 1 laws of Ondo state of Nigerian 2006.

“That you Zainab Suleiman, on the same date, and place did injure one Victoria Williams by causing her deep wound on her body and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 338 of the criminal code cap 37 vol 1 laws of Ondo state of Nigerian 2006.”

When the two counts bordering on Zainab was read to her, she pleaded not guilty to the counts.

The Police Prosecutor, Sargent Ajiboye Babatunde told the court that the accused person has committed punishable offence saying that he has witnesses to call on the matter.

Sargent Babatunde, however prayed the court to grant him short adjournment date for enable him to gather all his witnesses and study the case file urging the court to look at the circumstances surrounding the case.

Counsel to the accused person, Mr. Akinrata Adelanke who did not opposed to the Prosecutor application but saying that her client still presumed innocent until its contrary proved by the court.

Adelanke said the essence of bail is the discretion of the court and urged the court to temper justice with mercy in admitting her to bail.

According to him, “the victim involved is a minor and paramount to individual. The victim will be adequately taking care of because this is a family issues.”

In her ruling, the Presiding Magistrate Olufunke Adegoroye ordered the accused person to be remanded in Olokuta Correctional Centre.

She subsequently adjourned the case till February 11, 2020 for hearing.
