NUJ Empowers Women Journalists On Gender Equity, Safety

International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) in collaboration with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has stated that “it is time to empower women attain their potentials in their profession.”
National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abdulwaheed Odusile, who was represented by the National Secretary of NUJ, Shuaibu Leman, in his opening remarks recently.
“This is the second in the series across Africa running presently, we believe safety and security is priority in the profession looking at Africa entirely in terms of security because only the living journalists can file report. We require equality on gender terms,” he said.
According to him, “there is need for women to do their jobs effectively irrespective of their gender.”
He also implored female journalists to consider their safety in the process of delivering a report as more women would be loved to be seen in economic leadership that would shape the market and economic growth.
Earlier speaking, a public health expert, Dr. Lola Mabogunje, said women should build their capacity potentials by seeking more knowledge to be sure of their reports.
“I believe in good and evidential reports, women and in the building of capacity potentials. I am concerned for every woman’s capacity in the society, especially in the public view where a lot is required.
“Women should support each other by reaching our higher potentials, by helping those that are less privileged on how to keep themselves safe, and abide by the code of conduct in the profession,” she said.
Also speaking, the chairman of the FCT council, Mr. Paul Ella, said “it is good to tell a good story and not letting the story to tell about yourself.”
