Osun: Lions Clubs Promote Environmental Hygiene, Donate Sanitation Materials to Osun Market

The Osun New Era Lions Club and Igbajo Achievers Lions Club on Thursday organised a sanitation campaign at Farida Market, Olorunsogo, Dada Estate, Osogbo, as part of efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and improve public health.

The initiative featured a market-wide clean-up exercise, environmental sensitisation and the donation of sanitation materials to traders, with the clubs urging residents to embrace proper hygiene practices to prevent disease outbreaks and sustain a healthier environment.

The programme attracted members of both Lions Clubs, market executives, traders and community leaders, who participated in the exercise aimed at encouraging a culture of cleanliness within the market.

Speaking during the exercise, the President of Osun New Era Lions Club, Lion ESV Ikeoluwa Adeoti Akinyemi Aina, said the outreach formed part of the club’s humanitarian service to communities through initiatives that promote environmental sanitation and healthy living.
She stressed that maintaining clean surroundings remains one of the most effective ways to prevent diseases, noting that good health begins with a healthy environment.

“We are here not only to clean the market but also to educate people on the importance of environmental hygiene. A clean environment is a healthy environment, whether at home, in the marketplace or anywhere else. By keeping our surroundings clean, we reduce the risk of diseases,” she said.

Aina explained that the club donated cleaning materials to encourage traders to sustain the sanitation culture beyond the exercise.

The items presented included sweeping brooms, long-handled brooms for removing cobwebs, dustpans, waste baskets and refuse bags to facilitate proper waste collection and disposal.

Also speaking, the President of Igbajo Achievers Lions Club for the 2026/2027 Lions Service Year, Lion Dr. Nicholas Utho, said the initiative was designed to raise awareness among traders and other market users on the importance of maintaining a hygienic environment, particularly in locations where food items are sold.

According to him, poor sanitation in markets poses serious health risks and could expose residents to preventable diseases.

“This exercise is our contribution to promoting a healthier community by encouraging traders and everyone using this market to maintain cleanliness at all times. A clean environment benefits everyone,” he said.

Utho added that the donation of cleaning materials to the market leadership would support efforts to maintain proper sanitation within the market.

Commending the initiative, the Iyalode of Olorunsogo Town, Chief Mrs. Esther Olufunmilayo Akande, described the intervention as timely, noting that environmental cleanliness plays a vital role in safeguarding public health and promoting commercial activities.

She urged traders to make sanitation a daily practice, saying a clean market would not only reduce the spread of diseases but also boost customers’ confidence and increase patronage.

“When a market is clean, people feel more comfortable buying goods, especially food items. A neat environment promotes good health and attracts more customers, which ultimately benefits traders,” she said.

Akande expressed appreciation to the Osun New Era Lions Club and Igbajo Achievers Lions Club for the intervention and encouraged traders to make effective use of the donated cleaning materials.

The event concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to sustaining a cleaner, healthier and safer market environment through regular sanitation and responsible waste management.
