Democracy Day: Shettima Leads Special Prayers For Nigeria At Nat’l Mosque
As part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday, 5 June, 2026 joined top government officials and political leaders at the National Mosque in Abuja for a special Jummat prayer.
The prayer session was held in commemoration of June 12, a date set aside to honour Nigeria’s democratic journey and the heroes of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Since 2018, Nigeria has celebrated Democracy Day on June 12 following the decision of former President Muhammadu Buhari to officially recognize Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and his running mate, Babagana Kingibe, as the duly elected President and Vice President of Nigeria based on the outcome of the annulled 1993 election.
Shettima led other dignitaries in offering prayers for peace, unity, stability, and the continued growth of democratic governance in the country.
Among those present at the National Mosque were the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola; and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje.
The special prayer is one of the key events lined up to commemorate 2026 Democracy Day celebration under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
