A sociopolitical group, South West support group on Wednesday stressed the need for responsible leadership and improved healthcare delivery at the grassroots, as residents of Oyan in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State gathered for a community medical outreach.

The outreach, held at the Oyan Town Hall, focused on addressing healthcare challenges faced by underserved residents while also drawing attention to the role of governance in improving public welfare.

Speaking at the event, which was organised by South West Support Group in collaboration with Victory Support Foundation, the Chief Executive Officer of the VSF, Ambassador Olubunmi Oluwafunmilayo, urged residents to make informed decisions in the forthcoming governorship election.

“We must get it right,” she said.
“The kind of leaders people elect will determine the future of healthcare, infrastructure, education and development in our communities.”

She said the outreach was organised to bridge gaps in healthcare access, particularly for residents at the grassroots who struggle to access medical services.

“Many people cannot afford transportation to hospitals, while some health facilities lack adequate personnel and equipment.

That is why interventions like this are necessary,” she said.

Lawal explained that the programme was a continuation of similar interventions carried out across the state before the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries.

She also expressed support for the APC governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, describing him as an experienced administrator.

“His record as Commissioner for Finance and former Chairman of OSICOL shows that he understands governance and development,” she said.

Lawal further raised concerns over the condition of roads and healthcare facilities in parts of the state, noting that many communities still face infrastructural challenges.

Chairman of Odo-Otin North Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Honourable Adebayo Iyiola, described the outreach as timely.

“Bringing healthcare directly to the grassroots is commendable. This intervention will help many residents who need medical attention,” he said.

Iyiola also expressed confidence in the APC’s chances in the forthcoming governorship election, saying the party remains united across the state.

Also speaking, Secretary to the LCDA, Honourable Olabode Oluwatobi Divine, urged residents to prioritise their health and seek medical attention early.

“People should not wait until health conditions become severe before going for treatment. Early medical attention is important,” he said.

Representing the Oyan monarch, Oloye Adewale Adebisi, commended the organisers for what he described as a people-oriented initiative.

“This programme shows concern for the wellbeing of the people, and the community appreciates the effort,” he said.

Other stakeholders at the event, including the Iyaloja of Oyan, Mrs. Sidikat Saberedowo; Women Leader of Ward 14, Oyewo Nike; and former Special Adviser on Women Affairs in Odo-Otin North, Abioye Christiana, also lauded the organisers.

The outreach featured free medical consultations, malaria and blood sugar tests, distribution of drugs, eye glasses for residents with sight challenges, and health counselling, with beneficiaries describing the intervention as timely and impactful.
