Moghalu Decries Rampant Vote-buying In Anambra Poll, Urges Security Clampdown
Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the ongoing Anambra election, George Moghalu, has raised alarm over reports of widespread vote-buying across the state.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday at his residence in Nnewi North Local Government Area, Moghalu described the situation as “scandalous and embarrassing,” lamenting that it persisted despite the heavy presence of security personnel deployed for the exercise.
“The issue of vote-buying is no longer speculation. It happened very aggressively in the last by-election, and this time around, I’ve received reports of the same thing happening,” he said.
Moghalu urged security agencies to clamp down on those involved, insisting that such acts undermine the credibility of the electoral process. “With the quantity of security personnel brought into Anambra for this election, I expect that vote-buyers should have been caught and stopped by now,” he added.
He described electoral corruption as the “worst form of corruption,” saying it produces unqualified leaders and leaves the people to suffer the consequences.
Despite the irregularities, the LP candidate expressed optimism about the outcome, noting that he had campaigned extensively and presented his manifesto to the electorate.
“I’m very optimistic. I’ve done everything according to the rules. I sleep peacefully and watch everything play out. I ask people to verify who I am and judge based on my experience in the public and private sectors,” he stated.
Moghalu concluded by expressing faith in divine will, saying, “Power belongs to God, and He gives it to whom He pleases. What we are doing is making ourselves available for His will to prevail.”
