Seven farmers have been kidnapped by gunmen in Itaogbolu, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, prompting a manhunt by local security operatives.

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as the Amotekun Corps, confirmed the abduction on Monday, stating that its personnel have been deployed to comb the surrounding forests in an effort to rescue the victims.

Adetunji Adeleye, commander of the Amotekun Corps, confirmed the development during a telephone interview in Akure.

“I can confirm the incident. Our men have been in the forests and are still there.

“I was there yesterday (Sunday), and we are hopeful they will soon be rescued,” he said.

Similarly, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olushola Ayanlade, also acknowledged the incident and assured the public that an operation was underway to apprehend the kidnappers and rescue the abductees.

“Yes, there was a case of kidnapping at the weekend in Itaogbolu, and the police have launched an operation to ensure that those who are responsible are apprehended.

“I cannot confirm the exact number of the victims to you because there is still an ongoing operation, but we are working assiduously to ensure their safe return,” Mr. Ayanlade said.

A source familiar with the matter disclosed that the victims were seized while harvesting palm fruits on their farm. The kidnappers have reportedly reached out to some families of the victims, demanding N100 million as ransom for their release.

“We didn’t hear from them until yesterday evening (Sunday) when the kidnappers contacted one of the family members, demanding a ransom of N100 million for their release.

“We’re still negotiating with their abductors,” he disclosed.
