Delta LG Poll: APC Sues Umpire, LP Protests
-As Police Warn Troublemakers
The election of chairmen and councillors into the 25 Local Government Area in Delta State has assumed a new twist.
The All Progressives Congress in the state has dragged the state’s Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) to court to restrain it from conducting the election.
This came as the Labour Party in the state cried foul over what it tagged, “already prepared rigging results” between the electoral umpire and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
Also, it happened as the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abaniwonda Olufemi, in Asaba yesterday warned against any act of troubleshooting during exercise.
The CP threatened to deal ruthlessly with any person that single-handedly or collectively ignite troubles to manipulate the outcome of the exercise.
He said thousands of men of the command had been deployed with marching order on the rule of engagement.
APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Onojeghuo said in Suit No: OUHC/127/2024, the party sought restraining order against the conduct of the polls because the commission breached its law.
He said the matter had been enlisted for hearing from Thursday, July 12, 2024, at the High Court of Justice at Otor-Udu.
But Governor Sheriff Oborevwori during the PDP Mega rally at the Cenotaph in Asaba expressed dismay that the 2023 governorship candidate of LP, who could not win his unit, sojourned to Arise TV to protest against election his candidates did not campaign across the council areas, wards and units to win.
He said, “A man who lost in his polling unit in the general election, went to Arise Television to allege rigging. But to the best of my knowledge, the electoral umpire has assured us that modalities have been put in place for the election to be free and fair.
“Don’t assume that they will write any result because any result that is not genuine, whether for Chairman or Councillor will not be accepted.”
