Rivers Announces Date For LG Poll
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced October 5 as the date for local government election in the state’s 23 local government areas.
The Chairman/Chief Electoral Commissioner of RSIEC, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd.), who announced the date on Monday before a cross section of stakeholders at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, assured of a credible and transparent poll.
He disclosed that the commission’s staff has started preparations towards having a peaceful election. In the meantime, armed policemen have remained at the entrance of the council secretariat.
To avert bloody clashes, the police had since taken over all the 23 secretariats of local government areas in the state pending the forthcoming judgement of the Court of Appeal.
Governor Fubara inaugurated the caretaker committees to run the affairs of the local government areas despite the former chairmen’s insistence on staying an extra six months.
