English Premier League: Sunderland Relegate as Leicester Enter Safe Zone
Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was in action in Leicester City’s 1-0 Premier League win against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Saturday while Ahmed Musa was not listed by manager Craig Shakespeare.
Jamie Vardy scored the game’s only goal.
Ndidi got an early chance to put the Foxes ahead in the seventh minute when he received a good pass just outside the box, unleashed a strike from a promising position, but the shot was blocked for a corner.
The Nigerian shrugged off the challenge of Johny Evans in the 43rd minute to fire a left-footed shot. Vardy scored shortly afterwards as he latched on to a pass on the edge of the box to place a perfect strike that went behind the goalkeeper for his 15th goal of the season.
The game was Ndidi’s 13th of the season in the Premier League.
At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed following their 1-0 defeat in the hands of Bournemouth.
A Josh King goal in the 88th minute condemned David Moyes’ side to Championship football next season after narrow escapes in recent seasons.
Nigeria’s Victor Anichebe whose contract expires in the summer played all 90 minutes on Saturday and was presented with a chance to score in the 45th minute but the Bournemouth defence dealt with the danger.
The former West Bromwich Albion striker was a constant worry for the Bournemouth defence. Sunderland’s woes were made worse as Hull City’s goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic saved a late penalty against Southampton at Saint Mary’s.
The Cherries climbed to 10th place with 41 points, while Sunderland, without a win in their last 10 games prior, are bottom with 21 points from 34 games, 13 points off 17th-placed Hull City.
